Daren is an Extra Vehicular Activity instructor and flight controller in the Mission Operations Directorate at Johnson Space Center. He trains Shuttle and Space Station crew for their specific missions and instructs new astronauts in the generic skills required for spacewalk qualification. He also leads the operations planning and execution for Desert RATS (a field test simulating 2 weeks of a Lunar or Martian mission) and uses his operational experience to help design the next generation of space exploration systems. Daren earned his B.S. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Washington.
Aerospace Engineering Student at Mississippi State University with a lifelong dream to work for NASA and see a man on the moon.

My name is Heather and I'm a student and educator :)

My parents call me a NASA geek because of the interest and level of knowledge obtained about astornomy, spaceflight, and the history of NASA.

I look forward to learning more about all of you and hope to gain awesome friends and connections.

Aerospace engineer in the making

I am an aerospace engineer in the making, just a little while longer.

A reader rightly questioned my previous post on the subject as inadequate to any review or exposition.  It was an experience report in a world that needs a review.  Thanks @cstartorg.

So we're educating ourselves, as concerned citizens interested in a touchy subject.

A google search for "Freedom of Speech ITAR" reveals the work of many many people on our subject.  How does ITAR affect open source engineering for space systems.

A scan through the Epic Free Speech Archive confirms and explores the concept that the constitution which has made us great continues to provide for our development as a peaceful nation.

Likewise that search reveals more.

So be brave, open space awaits.

Of course there's megatons of confusion out there, so as in all things, one needs to correctly classify principles versus discussion versus raw noise.

What can I say? I live in Puerto Rico, and I am fascinated by space exploration. My dream is to work at a job directly supporting manned space exploration, be it at NASA or any of the contractors. Can't actually be an astronaut due to not having 20/20 vision on left eye (disastrous eyesight on the left, cant even read, however right eye is perfect... but they require BOTH eyes to be good)... but as long as I can support them, as long as I can have the honor to say "that rocket made it up there, and the crew got back safely thanks to me and my colleagues doing a great job on the pre-launch vehicle processing", I'll be in my happy place.

I speak too much. Other significant likes include anime (yes, I'm a fanboy), and music. And I love computers, I repair them for a living for now. Still looking for a part/full timer, though... no one seems to be hiring students... T-T;;

Hi! I'm a science geek who has loved space since I was four years old. I foster cats, write a little science fiction, and work full-time for the US Environmental Protection Agency. I was a physics major back in college, but I hope to go back to school in the near future to earn my engineering graduate degree. I attended the STS-127 NASA Tweetup in September '09, and returned for a chance to speak to the ISS in October (I was the one holding the mic when the Master Alarm went off - d'oh!). I love space travel, space popularization, and space education, and hope to someday find a job studying and exploring the cosmos, whether it's building the rockets or riding 'em.

I Live in Las Vegas NV, I'm a student pilot (12/09) with 68 hours and on the verge of my check ride. Which I have been for a couple of months. Time and money have slowed down my progress again.

I Love all things that fly, and am very interested in space... Always have been for as far back as I can remember... Always rockets and frying models.

After PPL, I'm going to go for instrument, and commercial, maybe CFI... No need for ATP. Looking to be able to fly a charter every now and then.

I recently got involved with a start up aviation pod cast "Mile High Flyers" http://www.milehighflyers.com/

Thanks for reading,

Mike

Ever since I was little I've loved rockets, manned missions, and pretty much everything having to do with space.

Eventually I started building model rockets and when I was 6, I got to see my first Shuttle launch out at KSC. By then, I knew I would end up doing something involving space in some way, even if it wasn't being an astronaut.

Right now, I'm a student studying Engineering Technology, with a Space Science specialization.

I'm on the verge of finishing my PhD (May/June 2010) in Bioastronautics in the Aerospace Engineering Sciences Department at the University of Colorado at Boulder. I've been a space enthusiast my entire life. My research is on lunar dust abrasion and my other key research interests are in analogue studies and human spacecraft, i.e. spacesuits and lunar/martian landers that involve humans in the loop. I applied to the astronaut pool in 2008-2009 to both CSA and NASA since I"m a dual citizen. I was video interviewed by CSA in the top 76. Getting closer to the stars!

I work for NASA at the Marshall Spaceflight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.  Currently the big project is Ares I, where we're quantifying and qualifying all failure modes, big and small.  By understanding how complex systems malfunction, we can design smarter sensors and react and recover from failures more effectively.  It also means, in the event of a catastrophic failure, being able to detect the problem before it's too late.

Before the Constellation program, I worked at Penn State as a grad student doing similar things, plus astrodynamics, autonomous robotics and machine learning and AI type stuff. Even farther back in ancient history, I did systems engineering at Johnson Space Center, where I worked X-38 and Shuttle flights to ISS.

Since I first saw a Spaceshuttle in the late 80's, I was stunned and wanted to know more.

But it wasn't until the Internet in the 90's that I was able to get more "up-to-date" information from sites like nasa.gov or when I discoverd TV streams from launches in the early 2000's. Which also sparked my interest in several related topics like Space exploration or Astro-photography.

Now in the late 2000's I have yet discovered another source of sharing my passion with other enthusiasts and even insiders - welcome to twitter.

I'm currently a PhD student at Texas A&M University in aerospace engineering. I work primarily as an experimentalist in aerodynamics--or, as I like to say, as a wind tunnel jockey.  My doctoral research will focus on stability and transition of hypersonic boundary layers; hopefully my work will benefit the design of future hypersonic aircraft and re-entry spacecraft.  Despite my post-graduate focus on the aero- side of aerospace, it was a love for and fascination with spaceflight that brought me to this field and that keeps me inspired.

When I'm not in the lab, I enjoy reading (almost anything), writing (mostly fantasy), taking photos, and generally being a geek.

Twitter was a novelty really, however the amount it has convinced me that I

discovered on here, none more so than @flyingjenny , the mastermind behind
this genius group. I shall endeavour (nice subtle joke...) to keep you
updated on my perspective (for what it's worth) of all things NASA.
